Fashion Forward

Y'all! I am very excited to share a company that reached out to me asking to publish a fashion article on my site! They are a retail wholesale company in the United Kingdom and what better way than to inform their consumers about the fashion trends and icons of today's society? Please do me a huge favor and check it out down below :) I am truly humbled that they asked to be featured on fashion-weakness and I hope y'all enjoy!

Modern Style Icons

The term ‘style icon’ is bandied around a lot these days and perhaps unnecessarily and inaccurately. It is true, there are many beautifully dressed people in the media, and with the emergence of street style as a cultural phenomenon we have more visual access than ever to the most stylish people in the world. However, there are a few women who really do stand out from the crowd, elevated from the rest of the fold with their unique and inimitable looks. We’ve split our four chosen women into two camps: in one are the women who look ridiculously fabulous and receive a little help from stylists and good fashion connections and the other are women who use their own judgement and style to inform their ensembles. Whilst it could be argued that these women are more original because they don’t look externally for styling tips and techniques, the women in the first category have stepped out in some truly iconic and polished looks that are worthy of recognition too.
Styled Icons:
Kim Kardahsian- Kim famously had a huge fashion makeover, which many media outlets claim started when she first started seeing Kanye West. She has since become the fashion industry’s darling, establishing good connections and friendships with some of the world’s best designers and personalities. Riccardo Tisci for example, the creative director at Givenchy, designed her wedding dress, and she is also close friends with Olivier Rousteing from BalmainAlber Elbaz atLanvin and French fashion royalty Carine Roitfeld. Kim opts for dramatic looks that are often block coloured in neutral palates like black, camel, grey and cream, incorporating sheer fabrics, lace and embellishments into her ensembles for high-fashion finishes. Her stylist is Jenke Ahmed Tailly, an influential but relatively unknown fashion aficionado who also styles BeyoncĂ© works collaboratively with Kim to produce the outfits that have helped to change the fashion industry’s opinion of her. Whereas before she was seen as a bit of a hanger-on, Kim is now a fully-fledged fashion contender, happy to adapt and modify her image to suit her surroundings, demonstrating her uncanny knack for reading her situations and environments well.
Jennifer Lawrence- Jennifer looks to Hollywood mega-stylist Rachel Zoe for her red carpet and off-duty looks. Rachel Zoe has dressed many of Hollywood’s biggest stars, for example Cameron Diaz, Demi Moore and Miley Cyrus, proving that she is one of the most trusted and sartorially on-point stylists in the world. Jennifer also has a fantastic relationship with Dior, with whom she signed a spokesmodel contract facing accessories and couture in 2012. In almost every red carpet and press appearance she has done for her films, she has worn a custom-made Dior dress, with our personal favourites including the cream gown she wore to the Oscars in 2012 and the slim-line sequined disco-ball creation for the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2013. Jennifer proves that good connections can take you far in the fashion world, but also that loyalty and commitment to a particular design house helps to cement your reputation as a bonefide fashion star, even if that is not your main consideration. It is relatively old-school for a young star to not dabble with many different designers and stick with one fashion house; however, this contributes to Jennifer’s image as a classic figure who is modern, but full of old-time sensibility.
Style Icons:
Olivia Palermo- Olivia first came to our attention in The Hills’ spin-off show, The City, which saw Whitney Port expand her fashion career to New York. Olivia worked in PR for iconic American designer Diane von Furstenberg before joining Elle in the accessories department. Olivia’s dab-hand at accessorizing has turned her into a sartorial star: she has a brilliant ability to imaginatively contrast prints with colourful jewellery and shoes in a way that is effortlessly chic and sophisticated. Her integral role as a stylist and editor in the fashion industry, as well as the founder of an e-commerce website, means that she has no need to look to someone else for styling tips or inspiration. Instead, she follows her own intuition, using the pavements and sidewalks of New York as her own personal runway. Many of her best outfits have been spotted whilst walking her cute dog. In particular, we love her prim and proper leopard print coat, contrasted with a relaxed plain white T-shirt and denim shorts, but then immediately elevated to high-finish with pointed mint-green flats and popping red nail varnish.
Iris Apfel- 94 year old Iris Apfel is a style inspiration. The fashion industry rarely takes notice of women who aren’t young, fresh-faced and lean, but Iris has managed to keep herself firmly in the people’s minds thanks to her theatrical and irreverent wardrobe. She still sits on the front row at many fashion shows, spotted this month at New York fashion week at Delpozo, and is even featuring in Kate Spade’s S/S 2015 campaign with Karlie Kloss. We love that Iris is the poster-woman for the fashion industry’s confrontation with ageism: she has a lifetime of knowledge and passion about fashion that she continues to express and she shouldn’t be ignored. The secret to her success is two things, her extraordinarily huge jewellery collection and the fact that she won’t be held back by other people’s judgement. For Iris, fashion is clearly more about fun and confidence than it is analysing and being mean about other people, thereby giving her sartorial creativity a free reign. Look to Iris’ fantastical and fabulous style by stacking jewellery, for example necklaces, bracelets and bangles, and layering with different colours and textures.
